Successful first digital national conference

2021-02-02

On January 13-14, SIQ organized for the first time the National Conference Better Schools Digitally. The conference offered 28 seminars with some 60 speakers to the more than 400 conference participants, from Kiruna in northern Sweden to Malmö in the south.

The plan was to organize the conference in Malmö, but during the autumn's new corona wave the plans were changed. The conference facility offered a ready-made studio that was supplemented by four additional studios for the many parallel seminars.

- Transforming a conference into a digital format was a challenge, but the technology worked beyond expectations. We are very happy with that. But the most important thing is that the content was appreciated. Six out of ten gave the conference an overall rating of over 8," says Annette Björnson, project manager for the conference.

- "Our aim was to give the participants a good mix of research, school development, good examples and inspiration, with the common denominators of quality work and this year's theme of equivalence," she continues.

Major development work for children and students in Malmö

The annual conference was organized in collaboration with the Swedish National Agency for Education and a host municipality, this year the city of Malmö, a city of the future where 40 percent of the population is under 29 and there is a natural focus on a well-functioning school. Malmö contributed several in-depth seminars with good examples of quality-enhancing work from preschool to upper secondary school.

- It has been very rewarding for us to host the Bättre Skola quality conference. We have had an opportunity to share our work with a focus on quality and equivalence and to conduct an internal dialog about what we wanted to show of all the good work that is done at our preschools and schools, but above all it has led to learning internally in the city of Malmö and a pride in being part of the development work that is done for all children and students in Malmö. There is an enormous power in this," says Anna Singhateh, project manager for the City of Malmö's participation.

Some quotes about the conference:

"Good setting and good moderator. Very good digital solution, professional and easy to participate after login. Good variety in the seminar. Good with closing speakers. Interesting to learn about the City of Malmö's quality work."

"That the organizer managed to arrange such a professional digital conference. With so much logistics. Which worked. The moderator Cecilia Christersson contributed to the warmth and that it was so professional."

"Very informative presentation from Mellersta förstadsskolan in Malmö. It was also exciting to listen to the father of PISA, Andreas Schleicher. I was proud of the professionalism shown by the City of Malmö as the host municipality. Brilliant contributions from the chair of the municipal board, Katrin Stjernfeldt Jammeh, among others."

"The parts that concerned leadership and development work. Mellersta förstadsskolan has a lot for me to put into practice in my work. And I'm a principal in a preschool. I am very pleased with the digital arrangement. The fact that I as a participant can participate to such a large extent, even though I had to interrupt shorter moments for other meetings. But the digital arrangement still enabled me to participate to a large extent. I also appreciate being able to go in and out of the seminars. It is not always as expected. Then I could change the seminar and get something positive and developing from it instead."
