When the kitchen chair became a time machine

Think back to April last year. A weekday morning. Connecting at the kitchen table with colleagues from their various home offices. Did it occur to you that you were in the Corona Express time machine?

What actually happened was that the enforced work at home placed us in a veritable time machine where digitization moved us ten years ahead at lightning speed. The digital highway was in place with broadband and digital meeting channels, it was just for us to accelerate and drive from our kitchen tables. This is what Kjell A Nordström and Per Schlingmann write in the thought-provoking and inspiring little book "Corona Express", where they also dare to predict the future.

But then just over a year ago: "Ok, here we are, how do we deal with the situation?". Regardless of the sector, we all sat in development and crisis meetings. But we did manage the situation and have continued to do so for over a year. Now we are being vaccinated on a regular basis and are starting to hope that the pandemic can finally release its grip on humanity.

The 10,000-krona question is, of course, what happens now to professional life and all activities.

A concrete tip from the book is to fantasize about tomorrow together. Start from the major changes that have taken place and reflect on how they affect your customers, employees, production, innovation and leadership. Build several different scenarios and prepare yourself mentally for future changes.

Because the new normal does not exist. Working life continues to be agile and the ability to quickly adapt to new conditions continues to be central to successful businesses. Not just moving fast, but neatly. Gracefully. This requires time for reflection and consideration.

I didn't think about the fact that I sat in a time machine at home at the kitchen table just over a year ago while the high school kids did the same from their rooms. But we did. A pat on the back to all of us and especially to all the teachers, leaders and producers who pulled on the leader shirts. What a journey we have been on.

We are now ready for the next stage of development. I am so curious about the future, what the hybrid working life will really bring.
