November 15, 2024: Quality development and HR - opportunities and challenges?

Quality management and HR are two areas that both focus on improving and optimizing organizational effectiveness and success. Integrating these two can create great opportunities, but also challenges.

The topic of the presentation was the somewhat unexplored relationship between the functions of quality development and HR in organizations. The seminar revolved around questions of how each profession and function can contribute to each other and how a closer connection between the functions and professions can simultaneously contribute to both more efficient competence supply and more efficient quality development in organizations.

The seminar was held by Jason Martin, Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor in Quality Engineering at Linköping University.

Jason Martin has a PhD in Quality Engineering but also has a background in HR with a Master's degree in HRM and HRD with a strong interest in HR-related areas in relation to quality development as a profession and practice.

November 15, 2024: Enabling Organizational Dynamism: Leading and Organizing for Change

In today's dynamic environments, where flexibility and adaptability are crucial, it is increasingly important to understand how organizations can strengthen their dynamic capabilities to remain competitive during periods of change.

In connection with World Quality Week, we highlighted new research. This morning we welcomed Catarina Bojesson who recently defended her thesis.

Enabling Dynamic Capability: Managing and Organizing for Change, which is about how organizations can enable their dynamic capability and how best to manage and organize for change.

Catarina Bojesson shared, through her study, new knowledge on how organizations operating in dynamic contexts can develop adaptability to changing needs. Specifically, it examines how organizations can be designed and managed to improve their readiness and flexibility for change. By analyzing the factors and mechanisms that affect an organization's dynamic capacity, we can gain insights into what causes inertia and how a transition to a more flexible and dynamic structure can be facilitated.

A key insight from the study is that companies often focus on internal efficiency to improve performance. However, successfully reconfiguring organizations in dynamic environments requires work processes that foster creativity and problem solving, as well as leaders who have the ability to adapt their leadership to the current context.

We invited you to share this important research and its insights on how organizations can develop their dynamic capabilities and meet the challenges of the future with flexibility and adaptability.

Catarina Bojesson holds a PhD in Innovation and Design and has a research focus on how organizations can be designed and managed to become more dynamic and evolve in relation to their environment. Her research is particularly focused on the organization of product development in the manufacturing industry. She teaches topics such as strategy, change management, sustainability and lean production at the engineering programs in production and product design at Mälardalen University, and coordinates collaborative projects with industry at Mälardalen Industrial Technology Center.

October 22, 2024: On civil preparedness and geopolitical intelligence with Confederation of Swedish Enterprise

How is the geopolitical context evolving and what is the current security situation? How can businesses and authorities at national, regional and local levels work together to build a strong national defense and increase resilience in the event of various crises?

Sweden is in the most serious security situation since the end of the Second World War. At the same time, both military and civilian defense are undergoing a major rearmament. A more uncertain world, as well as Sweden's membership of NATO, places great demands on strengthening Swedish preparedness for war and crises. It will also create new conditions and opportunities for both the private and public sectors.

When Russia carried out its full-scale invasion of Ukraine two years ago, it became clear to many that the world is in a new geopolitical situation, with deep distrust between several of the major powers and major uncertainties in the outside world. The global trend towards more free trade and cooperation between countries has shifted towards more state control and protectionism.

We live in a changing world. What is the "right thing" and the "right way" today is not necessarily the right thing tomorrow. Therefore, the SIQ Management Model pushes and pushes to constantly develop the adaptability of the organization to always be relevant and thus achieve success. By analyzing what can affect our own business and taking preventive and preparatory measures, we are better equipped for the future.

3 October 2024: How organizations can develop their ability to lead and manage change-driven processes! Learn about the Process Management Index!

The environment and requirements of businesses are changing at an ever-increasing pace, challenging traditional management and, in particular, traditional process management. Increasing complexity and a faster pace mean that many businesses are switching to principle-based management, networking and freedom with responsibility. At the same time, demands for control are increasing due to legal requirements and increased globalization.

So how can organizations develop their ability to lead and manage change-driven processes?

To meet the new needs, SIQ initiated a research project for the development, testing and application of a new process management index. The project builds on SIQ's and SQMA's needs-driven research on change-driven process management in collaboration with organizations in the automotive industry, the energy sector, medical technology and health and welfare services in regions and municipalities. Through the new insight tool, organizations gain knowledge of working methods that can be developed to meet an increased rate of change while maintaining quality. SIQ:s research leader Anders Fundin presented during the seminar how the tool works.

During the seminar we also met Catharina Jonson, Strategist Quality and Process at Göteborg Energi, who talked about the results of the work with SIQ process management index at Göteborg Energi and how it has served as a support in developing a change-driven process management based on customer and stakeholder needs.

September 19, 2024: How to speed up the climate transition - Järfälla is Sweden's third best environmental municipality

The three dimensions of sustainability run like a red thread through the entire SIQ Management model: social, ecological and economic sustainability. SIQ:s research shows that sustainable quality development work leads to a more sustainable business. Järfälla has worked for a long time on climate issues and was named the third best environmental municipality according to Aktuell Hållbarhet.

This morning we heard from Megha Huber, Head of Sustainability at Järfälla Municipality, with long experience in the environmental and climate field. It was she who developed the first carbon budget in Sweden together with Professor Kevin Anderson at Uppsala University. We learned about success factors and pitfalls in the sustainability work and how the work is now aiming for Järfälla climate neutral municipality in 2030.

The work integrates sustainability aspects throughout the entire spatial planning process in a quality, transparent and value-creating way. It is important to preserve the development of social, ecological and economic values to develop a good built environment. Target management has had an effect in Järfälla's sustainability work!

September 17, 2024: Lunch workshop SIQ Success Insight - a tool for reflection, dialogue and prioritization around quality development from a holistic perspective

Success Insight is included in all categories of your membership since the Annual Meeting. We therefore invite you to a workshop, with our research leader Anders Fundin and our business development manager Katarina Barter, where you as members can learn how to use this dialog tool.

SIQ Success Insight is a simple tool that allows you to carry out a self-assessment and prioritize the activities you need to take to improve. It is best used when you need to first gain insight into the culture of the work group and to then create the conditions for a continued dialog in the work group about strengths and areas for improvement. The Dialogue Tool provides a base to start with in the smaller work group.

What do we think we are good at?
What do we think we are bad at?
Where do we have different views?
What do we want to be characterized by and why?
What is important for us to improve?

Reflect together to bring up important points. The variation in the estimates is interesting to be able to approach each other.
With the help of Success Insight, you can jointly concretize your important improvement work from a holistic perspective.

August 28, 2024: Making Sustainable Development Sustainable through Holistic Quality Leadership with Willy Vandenbrande

Sustainable development has been defined as a balance between various aspects, as can be seen in the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) or in systems like ESG (Environment, Social and Governance) or in the well-known triple P Model (People, Planet, Profit) introduced by John Elkington in 1994.

There is a lot of attention for these systems and sustainability has become a buzz word. But when you look at the state of the planet, as described in the planetary boundaries model, it is clear that we are getting worse.

In this webinar we looked at the underlying reasons for the lack of sustainability results. Willy showed that a new approach, including a new definition, is needed and how important quality knowledge coupled with holistic leadership are, to achieve a change in thinking and to obtain a breakthrough in results.

Willy Vandenbrande has been working in the field of Quality Management for over 35 years; first as a quality manager and later as a consultant. Willy has delivered many presentations at international conferences (WCQI, EOQ, IAQ) and has written numerous articles on Quality Management. Willy is an ASQ Fellow and an Academician of the International Academy for Quality (IAQ). Within IAQ he is the chair of the Quality in Planet Earth Concerns Think Tank. In 2019 he was awarded the ASQ E. Jack Lancaster Medal for outstanding leadership in promoting quality worldwide.

April 18, 2024: Powerful with Simon Elvnäs

Our member seminar on leadership with Simon Elvnäs attracted a large audience. Simon Elvnäs has filmed hundreds of leaders and mapped their behaviors in a unique research study. The conclusion is that managers do not do what they are supposed to do, what they want to do, or even what they think they are doing.

We need to be aware of clarity, follow-up and feedback. It is even the case that if a leader spends more time on feedback on work already done to his employees, future work will go faster. During the seminar, we learned how much we work reactively and event-driven and the result is quality shortage costs.

This lecture was about becoming impactful! Conscious leadership - where instead of doing more of everything, the leader does less but right. Effective is also the name of the book, where more information from the studies of leadership can be found! Very instructive and an enabler for a leadership for improvement!

15 Feb 2024: How will AI impact culture, leadership and the way we work?

These are actually the choices we have given the exponential development of AI, according to Vahid Zohali - IBM who, together with Therése Svensson - responsible for Compliance and ethics, visited SIQ's member seminar where the focus was on AI's impact on quality work, both the culture, leadership and our processes.

As a leader, you need to understand what artificial intelligence means so that you can explain it to employees, customers and partners - and you need to take responsibility!

The opportunities for Sweden, organizations, you as an individual and society at large are enormous when it comes to solutions to the climate challenge. AI can help us improve efficiency by 3-4% per year until 2040, especially in administrative processes. The technology can help several professional groups in society. In addition to this, there are several game changers of a more transformational nature. Vahid emphasizes that every management and management team should think about AI based on; Purpose, Strategy and Governance.

In all this, there are major risks and threats with machines with a learning function and machines that can program themselves, who is responsible if it does something wrong? Therése emphasized the importance of taking responsibility and the ethical aspect and putting together an AI ethics board in the organization.

IBM, together with Meta, has initiated the Ai alliance, with 50 tech giants. The goal of the Ai Alliance is that all research on artificial intelligence should be open and transparent.
